ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) – One person is dead and at least another six are injured following a mass shooting at Maplewood Park Sunday.
Rochester police say they responded to the park on Bridge View Drive around 6:20 p.m. for the report of a large gathering with shots fired and found several people suffering from gunshot wounds, and a large group of people fleeing from the scene.
According to police, one 20-year-old person has died, another in life threatening condition and an additional five people have been hospitalized with "relatively minor injuries" at this time as a result of this shooting.
Police say some people were transported to the hospital by private vehicle throughout the night and others by ambulance.
The identity of the victim fatally shot has not yet been released as police are working to notify the family.
Several police agencies responded to the park including the Irondequoit Police, Monroe County Sheriffs, Rochester Police and New York State Police. RPD did confirm a party was happening in the area at the time of the shooting.
RPD is asking anyone with video of the incident to send the videos directly to police through Major Crimes Section at (585) 428-7157, Crime Stoppers at (585) 423-9300, or email MajorCrimes@cityofrochester.gov instead of posting the videos directly to social media. Police also ask anyone with information to call either 311 or 911.
"At this point we don't know how many people were shooting. We are trying to work our way through that. We are trying to work our way through as many witnesses as we can," Captain Greg Bello said.
Police say they have no suspects in custody at this time.
Rochester police told members of News 8 they would be able to provide more information on Monday morning.
News 8 did speak with neighbors who live along Maplewood Drive and said they have never seen anything like this happen in the area before and were scared and shocked.
"Looking out the window, this whole park, which was full of people was then running for their lives. There were people hiding behind cars, jumping my fence, crying. It was pure terror," one resident said.
"We looked out the front window and there were two kids here on our front porch with guns drawn, and then it was kind of like ‘Now what?,' Shelley Strong, who also lives on Maplewood Drive told News 8.
