Midweek preview: Bassett open season with difficult derby

The 2024-25 Hellenic League Premier Division season gets started on Tuesday night - and Royal Wootton Bassett Town face a tantalising derby date with Fairford Town to kick off their campaign (Sustain Stadium, 7.45pm kick off). Bassett's first ever competitive Hellenic League fixture to take place in July, it promises to be a tough encounter as Sam Collier and his team face a Fairford side - who like Bassett - will be eyeing up a playoff place in the new season. For both teams the game therefore represents a very early test of their credentials in what promises again to be a competitive division. The Reds finished eighth in 2023-24, and were just five points away from earning a postseason place. And Bassett's two victories against Fairford - including a narrow 1-0 victory in March sealed courtesy of Ollie Case's headed winner - ultimately proved vital in denying them a place in the top five. Collier's side will be hoping to strike the first of another double blow on opening night - and extend Bassett's unbeaten streak against Fairford to five games. For Fairford, there's the opportunity to gain an early advantage over a team they'll be looking to finish above this time round. It certainly has the potential to be a great opening match.
