Centre pushes for mandatory floodplain zoning law as only 4 states comply

With only four states enacting floodplain zoning legislation, the Centre plans to make it mandatory for accessing central flood management funds. The Ministry of Jal Shakti has urged states to implement the Flood Plain Zoning Act and demarcate flood zones. Despite updated guidelines and persistent communication, progress remains limited. The proposal aims to link compliance to funding under the Flood Management and Border Areas Programme (FMBAP), emphasizing the necessity for comprehensive flood management and addressing challenges like evacuation and lack of high-resolution data.
