O Pipo Tavern: A hidden gem for Portuguese cuisine in Newark

NEWARK, N.J. (PIX11) -- Those seeking authentic Portuguese dishes should pay a visit to O Pipo Tavern located at 349 Chestnut Street in Newark.

Carlos Mateus, the owner, has been in the industry since the 1980s.

O Pipo, which means wine barrel in Portuguese, opened in 2013. Before that, it was a liquor store and bar.

"When we started serving food, the business started picking up so we decided to renovate and make it a restaurant," said Mateus.
