TOPEKA (KSNT) - Washburn University is introducing a new forensic investigation sciences degree this fall.

The new degree will allow students to study crime scene investigation, fingerprint and firearm work. Students will get hands-on experience, and have the opportunity to work directly alongside the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI).

Proffessor Kim Gerhardt-Whiddon with the University tells 27 News, this degree has been in the works for two years.

"Part of the reason we drafted the new degree was to help students be more competitive," Gerhardt-Whiddon said. "Be more marketable, but also to help students get internships at agencies like the KBI."

The degree will be open to all Washburn students.
