Top Red Sox Prospect Reportedly Dealing With Injury, Misses Another Game
The Portland Sea Dogs will be without Boston Red Sox top prospect Marcelo Mayer for another game.
The shortstop is currently day-to-day with pectoral soreness, as reported by SoxProspects.com’s Chris Hatfield on Wednesday. Wednesday marked the second straight missed game for Mayer, who was also out Tuesday.
This is not the first time he has dealt with an injury during the season. The 21-year-old dealt with shoulder inflammation last year, which cut his season short. The year before, Mayer had back and wrist issues that only allowed him to play 91 games.
Mayer has said before that because of the injuries he faced in 2023, he struggled to find consistency during the season. With the Sea Dogs, he batted .189 with a .254 on-base percentage through 43 games.
“It was tough,” Mayer told reporters in January about his injury. “Everyone wants to be on the field, everybody wants to play. This is what we do, what we love. When something happens and you get hurt, it does suck. But it’s part of the game and you learn and grow from injuries. I’ve learned a lot from this past season, and I’m excited to start this year healthy.”
This season, the top prospect has been able to stay mostly healthy and has been a huge bright spot for Portland. In 74 games, Mayer is batting .306 to go along with his 38 RBIs, eight home runs and .852 OPS.
The shortstop was drafted by the Red Sox in the first round as the No. 4 pick in the 2020 MLB Draft. Since that time, Mayer has skyrocketed in prospect rankings, currently at No. 10 in Baseball America’s top 100 prospect rankings.
