New Delhi: The 2016 Rio Olympic Games were the first time that the Olympics were organised in South America. It was also the first Olympics to be held under the leadership of IOC president Thomas Bach. The USA once again topped the medals tally with 46 gold medals and the highest number of medals – 121 overall.

There was, however, an upset in the second position with Great Britain sending China to third spot. The Brits won 27 gold and 67 medals while China ended up with 26 gold and 70 medals to their name. India had a forgettable time in Rio Olympics, finishing in 67th place with just two medals. Shuttler PV Sindhu won a silver medal and wrestler Sakshi Malik won bronze.

Several other Indian athletes came close with the mixed doubles tennis duo of Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna finishing 4th, gymnast Dipa Karmarkar ending 4th in the women’s vault event and Abhinav Bindra missing the podium in men’s 10m air rifle event by half a point.
