OKC police arrest motel employees accused of stealing from guest

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) – Oklahoma City police arrested two men last week, accused of stealing money and a personal item from a guest staying at a motel where they both worked.

Police say the incident happened at the Remington Inn near Northeast 63rd Street and Bryant Avenue July 17.

According to court documents, a man checked into the motel and fell asleep in his room. While he was sleeping, documents say two employees used a master key to get inside and stole from him.

Police identified the suspects as Robert Kirk and Maurice Redd. Officials say when the victim woke up he noticed he was missing $300 in cash from his wallet and his cell phone. The victim told police no one else had permission to enter his room.

According to documents, police were able to corroborate what had allegedly happened by reviewing surveillance video. Documents note that the officer that responded to the call was unable to retrieve the stolen property from the suspects that were arrested.

Oklahoma City police shared some tips with News 4 employees Tuesday about how people can protect their valuables.

"Make sure your property, your personal property is secured," said Dillon Quirk with the Oklahoma City Police Department. "They sell small, safe and lock boxes that are made for traveling that you can keep your items in."

Quirk said the victim, fortunately, made it out of the incident without being hurt.

"Any time you're dealing with a crime such as this, where somebody is actually entering into an occupied space, it always could escalate from that point of having to be a more volatile situation," said Quirk. "So thankfully, it wasn't that kind of situation this time."

News 4 reached out to motel management Tuesday for comment and clarification on if the two suspects still have their jobs. A spokesperson declined to comment, noting that they were advised not to by their attorney.
