Cyprus’ division greatest postcolonial failure, says Greek president

President of the Greece Katerina Sakellaropoulou on Wednesday said Hellenism could never rest while the Cyprus issue remains open.

The head of state was speaking to the media at an event marking the 50th anniversary of the restoration of democracy in her country following the 1974 coup.

She spoke about the need for a fair and sustainable solution for Cyprus, based on the decisions of the Council of the United Nations and the EU acquis.

In a full-length interview with ERT, Sakellaropoulou described the issue of Cyprus and the economic crisis as the two “biggest failures of the postcolonial period.”

“Cyprus is a member of the EU and an EU member country is not meant to be divided,” she said.
