Opinions of Topeka locals needed in search for new police chief

TOPEKA (KSNT) - The City of Topeka is asking locals to weigh in with their opinions on the search for the next police chief by filling out a new survey.

Dan Garrett with the City of Topeka said in a press release on July 22 that a survey is now open for both English and Spanish speakers to gather feedback on the qualities and priorities Topekans think are most important for the next police chief.

Survey results will play a big role in the selection process for the future police chief and ensure the candidate is aligned with the values and expectations of locals.

“Selecting our next police chief is a critical decision that will impact the safety and well-being of our community,” City Manager Robert Perez said. “We want to ensure the selection process is transparent and inclusive, giving community members multiple opportunities to participate and share their perspectives.”

This will be the first step in the overall selection process which will include public input sessions. Details on these sessions will be shared in the near future.

Garrett said the survey will be open for two weeks, closing on Aug. 2, 2024. People can access either the English or Spanish versions of the survey.
