Six ways to keep kids busy and avoid spending at the airport this summer
JETTING away with the family this week?
Millions of us will have a holiday scheduled but after the recent travel chaos, you need to be prepared for possible delays and cancellations.
Plan ahead to keep little ones busy and avoid spending at the airport . . .
KIT KIDS OUT: Before your trip, create personalised activity kits for each child.
Download free print-at-home pages at crayola.com, stash packs of £1 stickers from The Works and bring colouring pencils from home.
LOAD OF FUN: Load up your tablet or smartphone with free apps and e-books and, crucially, download these before the flight.
Be sure to have the iPlayer Kids app (and their favourite shows downloaded), the Disney Junior Play app for interactive games and KidloLand for songs and games.
Get headphones so they are fully immersed.
Argos is currently selling JVC headphones for children at half-price, making them £7.99.
GAME ON: Bring lightweight, interactive games so that you don’t drain your phone battery.
Travel bingo, Uno and I Spy are classics — however, be warned, Uno can lead to tantrums for the losing sibling!
SNACK ATTACK: Instead of those pricey airport cafes, pack a variety of fun, healthy snacks in small containers to make snack time more fun.
Try trail mix, fruit and vegetable shapes made with cookie cutters, and DIY snack packs with some crackers, cheese and fruit.
BOOK THEM IN: Download child-friendly audiobooks and podcasts that can be enjoyed with headphones.
Great options include Thomas & Friends Storytime for ages three plus and Brains On! which is a science podcast that caters to curious kids.
TIME IT RIGHT: The key to keeping kids distracted is to pace your activities.
Try something new every 30 minutes to avoid a boring and stressful flight.
