OCHA reports rising death toll from recent storms in Afghanistan

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has reported that the death toll from recent storms, heavy rains, and floods in several provinces of the country has risen to 58.

On Monday, July 22, OCHA released a report stating that an additional 380 people were injured due to the storms and floods.

According to OCHA’s report, 9,925 families have been affected by these natural disasters, and 550 returnee tents at the Torkham transit point have been destroyed.

The UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Afghanistan continues to emphasize addressing urgent needs such as food, shelter, health services, and psychological support for affected families of natural disasters in the country.

The organization also reported that water and sanitation facilities in several provinces of the country have been damaged due to storms, heavy rains, and floods.

Meanwhile, last week’s storms, heavy rains, and floods in the provinces of Nangarhar, Nuristan, Badakhshan, Baghlan, Kunar, and Laghman resulted in dozens of fatalities and significant financial damages.

Earlier, the World Food Programme had reported that Afghanistan ranks as the sixth most climate-vulnerable country globally, increasing the risk of famine crises in the country.
