Spurs look set to sell Danish international, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, in the coming days after reports of a deal being agreed with Marseille. Ex-Crystal Palace player, and Tottenham fan, Darren Ambrose, has expressed his disappointment at the transfer.

Hojbjerg is set for a switch to Ligue 1

It has long been expected that Hojbjerg would depart Tottenham this summer after seemingly falling down the pecking order under Ange Postecoglou.

Although Hojbjerg featured in all but two of Spurs’ Premier League games last season, he only started eight games, his lowest tally since joining the club by some way. (TransferMarkt)

Fabrizio Romano revealed on Sunday the 21st of July that Hojbjerg had agreed on a switch to Marseille, accepting the French side’s offer after speaking to the club’s new manager, Roberto De Zerbi.

Romano confirmed the Dane had no intentions of agreeing to a new Spurs deal with his current one expiring next year.

More clarity on the structure and payment of the deal was announced by Alasdair Gold who explained that Hojbjerg’s move would be a loan with an obligation to buy, effectively meaning that Marseille would pay Spurs up to £17 million at the conclusion of his loan which ends in the summer of 2025.

Ambrose isn’t happy with Spurs’ decision to sell Hojbjerg

Despite Tottenham receiving an impressive potential £17 million fee for an unwanted midfielder whose contract expires next summer, Tottenham fan and ex-player, Darren Ambrose, isn’t pleased.

He said (TalkSport on YouTube): “You know what? I am disappointed by that. I know he gets a lot of stick, I think sometimes unnecessarily. I think he is like marmite for Spurs supporters. Sometimes they are not having him, sometimes they are 50-50- really, but I like him.

“I think he could add a lot in terms of experience as well. You can tell that he is passionate for the football club when he comes on. Sometimes he has come on, he has cleared one off the line, and it’s like he has scored a goal. He had a good Euros as well. I am disappointed if this goes ahead.”

Spurs Web opinion

As Ambrose stated above, Hojbjerg did split opinion, although I feel the opinion was less 50-50 towards the end of his time at Tottenham and more fans leant towards selling the midfielder, rather than keeping him.

I believe £17 million or so is a great deal for a player who clearly wasn’t hugely important to Tottenham, nor the manager and is 28-years-old and unwilling to sign a new contract.
