Mets Minors Recap: Kodai Senga Struggles For Syracuse
The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (Double-A) were no hit on Saturday and Kodai Senga struggled for Triplw-A Syracuse in what may be his final rehab outing.
Triple-A
Rochester Red Wings (51-42) 5, Syracuse Mets (59-35) 8
- CF Luisangel Acuña: 3-for-5, 2B, 2 R, CS (11) (.680 OPS)
- LF Luke Ritter: 0-for-2, R, BB (.853 OPS)
- 2B Brett Baty: 2-for-4, 3 RBI (28) (.879 OPS)
- RF Carlos Cortes: 0-for-3, R, BB, K
- 1B JT Schwartz: 2-for-4, 2B, 2 R, HR (1), 2 RBI (4) (.633 OPS)
The Syracuse Mets struck early and often, led by Brett Baty and his three RBIs as well as JT Schwartz having his best game thus far at the Triple-A level, totaling two extra base hits including his first Triple-A home run.
- RHP Kodai Senga (5.23 ERA) 3 IP, 5 ER, 8 H, 3 BB, 1 K, 1 HR allowed (47 of 79 pitches for strikes)
- RHP Eric Orze (3.57 ERA) 2 IP
- RHP Bryce Montes de Oca (8.10 ERA) 2/3 IP, 2 BB, 2 K
- LHP Alex Young (1.16 ERA) 2/3 IP, 1 H, 1 BB
- RHP Wilkin Ramos (4.22 ERA) 1 2/3 IP, 1 BB
- RHP Cole Sulser (1.48 ERA) 1 IP, 3 K
Kodai Senga was effective, if not dominant through his first three innings. However in the fourth inning, the wheels came off and he allowed five runs including a home run to Nationals prospect Brady House. Senga threw 79 pitches on the day and this may wind up being his last rehab outing if the sole purpose of this outing was to get his pitch count up.
The bullpen saved the day, pitching the last six innings, only allowing one hit and no runs.
Double-A
Binghamton Rumble Ponies (47-39) 0, Portland SeaWolves (50-37) 3
- 1B Ryan Clifford 0-for-3, 1 K (.921 OPS)
- CF Alex Ramirez 0-for-4, 1 K (.655 OPS)
- DH Nick Lorusso 0-for-2, 1 BB, 1 K (.567 OPS)
The Rumble Ponies were no hit so there isn’t much to write home in terms of offense. Detroit Tigers top pitching prospect Jackson Jobe had their number all game, only allowing two baserunners via walks.
- RHP Nolan McLean (5.06 ERA) 4 IP, 2 R (1 ER), 1 H, 3 BB, 3 K (37 of 67 pitches for strikes)
- RHP Cameron Foster (3.98 ERA) 3 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 K
- RHP Cam Robinson (3.18 ERA) 2 IP, 1 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 1 HR allowed
Nolan McLean had a good outing, only allowing one earned run on one hit while walking three batters and striking out three. McLean has been good in Double-A at limiting hits, however his strikeouts have dropped significantly.
Hopefully, his recent announcement that he will focus on pitching exclusive will allow him to reach his full potential.
High-A
Brooklyn Cyclones (41-48) 2, Jersey Shore BlueClaws (50-39) 7
- CF Nick Morabito: 0-for-4, K (.700 OPS)
- RF Omar De Los Santos 1-for-3, 2B, SB (32), K (.493 OPS)
- LF Karell Paz 1-for-4, 2 K (.649 OPS)
The Cyclones only managed two runs Saturday; via a balk and a wild pitch. Karell Paz has a 10 game on-base streak.
- RHP Kade Morris (3.33 ERA) 3 1/3 IP, 3 unearned runs, 6 hits, 8 K (51 of 72 pitches for strikes)
- LHP Ryan Ammons (2.25 ERA) 1 IP, 3 BB, 1 K
- RHP Dakota Hawkins (4.22 ERA) 2 2/3 IP, 1 ER, 1 H, 2 K
- RHP Henry Henry (6.48 ERA) 1 IP, 3 R (1 ER), 2 H, 1 BB
- RHP Jimmy Loper (7.65 ERA) 1 IP, 1 K
Kade Morris had a strong but brief outing, striking out eight hitters. However, the defense didn’t do him any favors committing three errors on the day. Morris has been striking out hitters in bunches since his promotion.
Low-A
Jupiter Hammerheads (47-42) 11, St. Lucie Mets (30-59) 7
- RF Willy Fanas 3-for-5, 2 RBI (12), K (.611 OPS)
- C Ronald Hernandez: 2-for-3 (.760 OPS)
- DH Drew Gilbert 0-for-3, BB (.398 OPS)
- 3B Jacob Reimer 1-for-2, R, BB (1.625 OPS)
- CF Kevin Villavicencio 4-for-5, 2B, 3B, 2 R, RBI (15) (.615 OPS)
Despite a big day at the plate from Yohairo Cuevas, the St. Lucie Mets couldn’t overcome poor pitching. Boston Baro came in to replace Jacob Reimer (who is continuing his rehab assignment) and notched a hit in his only at-bat. Kevin Villavicencio fell a home run short of the cycle.
- RHP Ernesto Mercedes (5.54 ERA) 2/3 IP, 4 ER, 2 H, 2 BB (8 of 27 pitches for strikes)
- RHP Wilson Lopez (3.55 ERA) 1 IP, 1 ER, 1 H, 2 BB, 2 K
- RHP Nick Bautista III (8.05 ERA) 1 2/3 IP, 1 ER, 3 BB, 1 K

- RHP Layonel Ovalles (6.55 ERA) 2 IP, 3 H, 1 BB, 1 K
- LHP Gregori Louis (1.80 ERA) 1 1/3 IP, 1 ER, 3 H, 1 K
Layonel Ovalles was the only pitcher on the day to not allow a run. The St. Lucie Mets pitchers walked 12.
