Biden announces he's dropping out of presidential race
President Joe Biden announced that he will be ending his presidential re-election campaign. It follows growing demands from senior Democrats that he drop out as polls showed him increasingly unlikely to beat Donald Trump in an election.
Until today, Biden had defiantly stated he wasn't going anywhere, blaming the calls to quit the race on a small circle of "elites" who want him eliminated.
But doubts surged following the president's low-energy debate with Trump in Atlanta last month, which ultimately led to a steady stream of Democratic officeholders in Congress calling on the president to exit the race and leave his legacy untarnished.
Recently, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) reportedly advised Biden to consider stepping down in private conversations. Biden said he will focus on fulfilling his term as U.S. president.
