40 countries seek membership in BRICS ahead of 2024 summit

Foreign media have reported an unexpected surge in interest from countries wanting to join BRICS, with 40 nations expressing their desire to become members in 2024.

BRICS News, in a report published early this Sunday, June 21, noted that the number of countries expressing interest in joining the BRICS coalition is rapidly increasing ahead of the 2024 summit.

BRICS is an international group led by emerging economic powers, including Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The group has held annual meetings since 2009, and according to Reuters, BRICS member countries, which control 28% of the world’s economic power, aim to reduce Western dominance led by the United States.

The group’s popularity among developing countries was highlighted during the BRICS annual summit last year, where at least 40 countries, including Argentina, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Cuba, Congo, Comoros, Gabon, and Kazakhstan, submitted official requests to join.

Following this growing interest and ahead of the BRICS leaders’ summit scheduled for October 2024 in Russia, at least 40 additional countries from Asia, Africa, South America, and Eastern Europe are eagerly seeking membership.

BRICS News reports that these countries aim to strengthen their local currencies and economies, reducing dependence on the US dollar.

It remains uncertain whether the group will accept new members, but the BRICS leaders mentioned last year that expanding the group is on the agenda for the upcoming summit.

As the BRICS group considers expanding its membership, the surge in interest from numerous countries underscores the growing influence and appeal of the coalition. The upcoming summit in October 2024 will be crucial in determining how the group addresses these requests and potentially reshapes the global economic landscape.
