Samsung phone users receive special WhatsApp upgrade iPhone can’t beat – see full list of eligible handsets
SAMSUNG smartphones are about to get a special WhatsApp feature that even iPhone can’t currently match.
The South Korean tech giant is rolling out yet more AI infused tools to selected Galaxy models.
New feature will come to Flip 6 and Fold 6 first[/caption] WhatsApp is one of nine apps that will receive the upgrade[/caption]These will include things like more advanced image editing.
But there’s also an upgrade to the language and translation elements.
At the start of the year, Samsung revealed Galaxy AI, it’s new brand for all thing artificial intelligence.
Among the package was translation for messages and real-time phone calls.
These work on-device, so no private information is sent off elsewhere to the cloud.
And real-time phone call translations play back the voice in your selected language – and will do the same for the person on the other end of the line even if they don’t own a Samsung smartphone.
These tricks were all restricted to Samsung’s own apps at launch.
But now the company is preparing to enable them across third party apps.
During the recent announcement for the new Galaxy Flip 6 and Fold 6, Samsung said it would be coming to other popular apps but fell short of naming any.
SamMobile has obtained a list of all the apps that are expected to support it.
The feature will be updated with Samsung’s One UI 6.1.1. Android software upgrade, which is rolling out soon.
Apps reported to soon support translation are:
- Facebook Messenger
- Google Meet
- Kakao Talk
- LINE
- Signal
- Telegram
It’s likely that Samsung will roll this out to all smartphones that currently support Galaxy AI’s Live Translation tools.
If this is the case, the following models can expect to see the expanded translation features in WhatsApp and other communication apps:
- Galaxy S22
- Galaxy S22+
- Galaxy S22 Ultra
- Galaxy S23
- Galaxy S23+
- Galaxy S23 Ultra
- Galaxy S23 FE
- Galaxy S24
- Galaxy S24+
- Galaxy S24 Ultra
- Galaxy Z Flip 4
- Galaxy Z Flip 5
- Galaxy Z Fold 4
- Galaxy Z Fold 5
- Galaxy Tab S8
- Galaxy Tab S8 Plus
- Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra
- Galaxy Tab S9
- Galaxy Tab S9 Plus
- Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra
BATTLE FOR AI
In an interview with The Sun, Samsung’s UK boss seemed unfazed by Apple‘s grand new AI plans for iPhone.
Samsung’s rival recently revealed Apple Intelligence, which will be coming to iPhones, after signing a deal with ChatGPT creator OpenAI.
“Can they [Apple] compete with us I would say?” James Kitto, Samsung’s UK and Ireland head of mobile told The Sun exclusively.
“We’ve built our own models, our own language models that run specifically on-device but then we’re also working with great partners like Google and we open the door to many others when they’ve got the right kind of solutions that will deliver something tangible to the customer.
“I think what we’ve proven there is you can’t home grow AI on your own and I think other players who will eventually come to market with AI have also discovered that actually this is a new open era that we’re in.
“We’ve always been in it and I think others are finding that they’re going to have to start opening up their doors to participate in what is such a fast paced industry.”
