Albany officials warn of harmful algae blooms in Washington Park Lake

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The Albany Water Department is advising the public to be cautious of harmful algae blooms in Washington Park Lake. Harmful algae blooms can produce toxins that can be harmful to people and animals.

No fishing or swimming for dogs is allowed in Washington Park Lake until further notice, said the Albany Water Department. If the water appears green and has a paint or pea soup-like appearance, assume it's unsafe.

According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), exposure to harmful algae blooms can cause health risks in people and pets when water with blooms is touched, swallowed, or inhaled. Exposure to high levels of harmful algae blooms can cause diarrhea, nausea or vomiting, skin, eye or throat irritation, and allergic reactions or breathing difficulties.

If you or your pet comes in contact with suspected harmful algae blooms, make sure to rinse off immediately with clean water. You can report symptoms related to exposure to the New York State Department of Health. If you suspect you found a harmful algae bloom, the DEC asks that you take a photo and report it through the online form on DEC’s website
