Adam Lambert opened up about his new music and made some very rare comments about his boyfriend Oliver Gliese in a new interview.

The 42-year-old American Idol alum dropped his EP Afters on Friday (July 19). After describing the project as “a little horny” and “a bedroom conversation” he explained that it symbolized a fearless era in his career.

He even reflected on how his relationship and time with Oliver helped lay the groundwork for the sexy project.

Speaking to People, Adam noted that he “got a big slap on the wrist for a performance that was really sexualized early in his career.” This is likely a reference to his 2009 performance at the American Music Awards, which featured a steamy same sex kiss and was censored by CBS.

The situation caused him to be “a bit cautious with how I express myself,” he said. That’s changed for him all these years later.

“So I guess I don’t really feel like I have anything to lose,” he told the outlet. “That kind of feeling, when that feels very true, it’s a good feeling. I think I’ve worked really hard for a really long time. I’ve sort of earned my spot and I feel secure in it. I feel like I’ve had an amazing couple years of doing a lot of really cool separate projects, and more and more things are on the horizon.”

All of that has helped him realize that he doesn’t need to be afraid of losing it all.

On the topic of Afters, Adam added that he decided to do something he’d never done before and stop censoring himself while writing.

“So often in the past, I’ll be in a writing situation and you’re with a couple of songwriters and you’re all trying to come up with a rhyme to something, and my silly little dirty mind will come up with a naughty little lyric,” he recalled. “And then we all laugh and go, ‘Oh, no, no, we can’t put that in there. That’s too much.’”

Adam continued, saying, “And so with this one, it was like, ‘No, let’s do it. Let’s do the naughty rhyme.’ It just felt like I was finally going, ‘Yeah, let’s do it.’”

He added that the pandemic gave him some breathing room to find this new outlook on life. That and his relationship with Oliver.

“I’ve been able to have a bit more of a personal life for a little while, and I’m in an amazing relationship and we socialize a lot and put on a lot of parties and we go out, and I just wanted to make music that sort of reflected that experience, that reflected that reality,” he said.

See what he had to say about the state of queer pop recently.

We just got some pics of Adam and Oliver at a Pride event last month.
