Effects of CrowdStrike IT outage show up in Brazil

0

Friday’s global IT outage, caused by a flawed software update from cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike, affected Brazilian businesses, banks, and airports.

The presidential press office confirmed that the Gov.br platform, used by millions of Brazilians for various services, was not affected. The federal government’s Digital Government Integrated Cybersecurity Center (CISC) is monitoring the situation.

The Supreme Court’s systems, meanwhile, were disrupted earlier on Friday. According to the court, however, most services have been re-established.

Azul, one of Brazil’s major airlines, stated earlier today that the problem “directly impacts the reservation system and operations in global aviation,” causing potential delays. They advised passengers with flights today who have not yet checked in to arrive at the airport early and visit Azul’s service desk.

A local TV station in Campinas reported at least five delayed flights at Viracopos airport, Azul’s hub. Later, ABV, the private company managing Viracopos, reported delays in 15 arrivals and 24 departures by 11:30 am Friday.

The National Civil Aviation Agency (Anac) announced it is “monitoring the situation” and is in contact with airline and airport operators “to assess and minimize possible impacts.” Anac added that delays over 30 minutes and cancellations imply certain liabilities for the airlines.

Gol and Latam, two other major Brazilian airlines, reported no impacts on their operations.

Some banking apps were also affected. Bradesco, one of Brazil’s largest private banks, reported that due to a “global cyber blackout,” its digital channel systems were unavailable this morning. Rico, an investment platform, said some of its functions might face instability.

CrowdStrike, a cybersecurity firm with thousands of clients globally, admitted that a defective update for Windows (the world’s most-used operating system) caused the outage that is grounding hospitals, banks, media outlets, and businesses worldwide.

Friday’s global mayhem is a stark reminder of the massive dependence of the global economy on certain software, and how any flaw could trigger a domino effect.
