Rodriguez misses weight by six pounds, Tanaka fight canceled
Amateur standout Issei Aramoto’s pro debut serves as the new main card opener
Tomorrow morning’s Junto Nakatani vs Vincent Astrolabio show is down a title fight after Jonathan Rodriguez came in nearly two weight classes heavy for his shot at WBO super flyweight champion Kosei Tanaka.
“Titan” Rodriguez (25-2-1, 17 KO) hit the scales at 121.25 pounds compared to Tanaka’s (20-1, 11 KO) 114.8, prompting a swift cancellation.
The Japanese Boxing Commission is potentially the strictest in the world when it comes to weight misses, and while they can’t do all that much to a foreign fighter’s career, I’d be surprised if he’s ever allowed to compete on Japanese soil again. He didn’t even pull a Full Nery and stop Tanaka, so he can’t bank on them lifting a suspension for the sake of revenge.
The main event, the vacant flyweight title fight between Riku Kano and Anthony Olascuaga, and Tenshin Nasukawa’s bout with a different Jonathan Rodriguez remain intact. The new main card opener sees former Paris 2024 hopeful Issei Aramoto make his pro debut in a super middleweight bout against Mongontsooj Nandinerdene
