Turkish Agency donates medical equipment to Herat cancer ward

The Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) has made a significant contribution to the Herat Regional Hospital’s cancer ward, donating medical facilities and equipment valued at $55,000.

According to TIKA officials, this donation includes approximately 40 items, such as medicines, medical equipment, and facilities essential for cancer treatment.

The Consul General of Turkey in Herat emphasized, “We have provided a total of 40 items to enhance the capabilities of this hospital.”

Doctors specializing in oncology at the hospital expressed gratitude, stating that these new facilities have improved their ability to treat cancer patients effectively.

With the additional resources, the cancer ward has expanded from 10 to 18 beds, accommodating up to 30 patients daily for treatment.

Despite these improvements, doctors highlighted the ongoing need for advanced equipment, particularly for surgical procedures that are currently unavailable on-site.

Farooq Ahmad Sedeqqi, the head of the cancer center, lamented, “We still lack an operational operating room in our department. Patients requiring surgery must either travel to Herat or Kabul.”

Looking ahead, Sedeqqi expressed hope, “If we can establish a radiation therapy department, we aim to offer comprehensive services locally, minimizing the need for patients to seek treatment abroad.”

The cancer diagnosis and treatment department at Herat Regional Hospital has been operational for over four years, during which time it has diagnosed and treated 2,300 cancer patients.

This initiative underscores Turkey’s commitment to enhancing healthcare in Afghanistan, particularly in critical areas like cancer treatment, through cooperative partnerships and aid efforts.

The collaboration between TIKA and Herat Regional Hospital marks a significant step towards improving cancer care in Afghanistan.
