Report: Postecoglou gives verdict on Djed Spence’s status at Spurs after Hearts cameo

It was a surprise for most Tottenham fans to see Djed Spence involved with the Tottenham team that travelled to play Hearts in pre-season, and there was an even bigger shock when the right-back was thrown on.

Spence has been heavily linked with a Spurs exit

Djed Spence has experienced multiple tough years since joining Tottenham from Middlesborough.

The 23-year-old was branded as a ‘club signing’ by divisive manager, Antonio Conte, subsequently being given minimal minutes before being loaned to Leeds United shortly after Ange Postocoglou’s arrival. (TalkSport)

It appeared as though Spence burned his bridges at Leeds with the club ending his loan prematurely, forcing Tottenham to find the full-back a January loan (Evening Standard).

Genoa took the former Nottingham Forest loanee to Italy and despite Spence putting in some good performances, he couldn’t stay permanently due to Tottenham’s price being too dear for the Seria A outfit. (BBC Sport)

Despite Genoa’s failed attempts to sign Spence permanently, The Athletic confirmed that Djed Spence, alongside Sergio Reguilon, is likely to depart North London this summer.

Spence impressed on his first Spurs game since last pre-season

Djed Spence hadn’t featured in Lilywhite since Spurs’ last pre-season game of 2023/24 against Barcelona, but shockingly came on against Hearts and proved that perhaps there is room for redemption as the defender grabbed a goal and an assist.

When asked about Spence’s future with Spurs, Ange Postecoglou said: “Djed did well. He had had a tough couple of years. He is training with us, and I think with all of the players when they are here with us, I treat them as Tottenham players unless something suddenly changes.”

Further concluding that his display against Hearts was impressive stating: “He was good tonight. Took his goal well, he contributed well and got an assist”. (Jay Harris on X)

Spurs Web opinion

It remains to be seen how Spence is utilised in the upcoming games, given he isn’t sold before then, but it’s undeniable that should the 23-year-old reach the levels he was playing at when on loan with Nottingham Forest, he would be good competition for Porro next season, the biggest concern would be his attitude.

The fact that Spence was booted out of Leeds United for his attitude is hardly going to go down well with the club and Postecoglou, who appear to place great importance on his squad’s character.

I believe that should Spence stay it would be the right move with the Postecoglou unlikely to keep Spence if he has concerns over his demeanour.
