Marking where it all began
Queen’s Park recently celebrated turning 157 years young by going back to where it all began on 9 July 1867 when a group of gentlemen met at 3 Eglington Terrace on the south side of Glasgow ‘for the purpose of forming a Football Club’ and agreeing to place their colours there.
The tenement block at 400-404 Victoria Road, which today incorporates the Victoria Bar, now stands where 3 Eglinton Terrace was, and Club Directors Gregor Hall and Lynne McCartney were delighted to hand over a framed jersey to the operator of the bar, Annie Kane, and her assistant Jen Hailstones, who will display it with pride.
Gregor said: “We recently visited the Victoria Bar, along with our friends at The Hampden Collection, to mark the demarcation and opening of the world’s biggest open-air football museum – Football’s Square Mile.
“That day a plaque was unveiled to mark the site at 400-404 Victoria Road as one of the 21 football heritage sites where football as a passing game was formed. It was nice to go back and meet with Annie, who has kindly agreed that we can mark the site further with the framed jersey.”
