Assam government repeals Muslim Marriages and Divorce Registration Act

The Assam government has decided to repeal the Assam Muslim Marriages and Divorce Registration Act from 1935 to prevent child marriage and ensure parity in marriage and divorce registration. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma aims to introduce a new bill for Muslim marriage registration in the next assembly session. The state also plans to implement the Uniform Civil Code to address issues like underage marriage and property inheritance. Over 1,000 arrests were made in a recent crackdown on child marriage in Assam.
