Man Utd blow as 'excellent' £59m star has now decided to join UCL giants - report
Benfica wonderkid Joao Neves has decided to join Paris Saint-Germain amid interest from Manchester United, according to Portuguese publication Record (page 8).
The 19-year-old has been closely monitored by the Red Devils over the past year, but it appears Paris Saint-Germain are about to win the race for his signature.
Record claim that Neves is ‘very close’ to leaving Benfica. He ‘prefers’ to join Les Parisiens over United. The Red Devils have ‘already given up’ in their pursuit.
Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique played a big role in convincing the youngster. The French champions have offered to pay £59 million including add-ons.
Benfica are aiming to stretch the transfer package on the table knowing that they won’t receive anything close to the £101 million release clause in Neves’ contract.
United set to miss out on fantastic talent
The Red Devils are in the transfer market for a new defensive midfielder. Neves would be an ideal acquisition, considering his young age and immense potential.
The 19-year-old is strong with the ball at his feet and has excelled with his tackling, duel winning ability and recoveries. He is only 174cm in height, but has a brilliant leap in the air.
United are now set to miss out on his services. It is a transfer blow for the club. The budget could be a reason behind not competing with PSG for the ‘excellent‘ teenager.
The club have already spent £36.5m on Joshua Zirkzee while Lille centre-back Leny Yoro is set to cost £52m.
After a huge outlay of £88.5m, United may want more player sales before making another marquee signing.
With PSG about to sign Neves from Benfica, it could open the door for United to land Manuel Ugarte, who is high on their wishlist. He could be signed for around £38m.
