'Trump looks bored to tears': Critics liken Vance's RNC speech to a 'wet box of matches'

The reviews are in on social media and the consensus was clear: Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance was a bore Wednesday night.

The largely monotonous Vance, former President Donald Trump's pick for vice president, tried to energize the MAGA crowd at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, but the little fist pumps and reliance on "mamaw" stories seemed to fall "flat."

"Vance’s speech falling flat," wrote Bill Kristol, editor at large at The Bulwark. "But I imagine Trump’s people insisted it be flat. No competition for the Big Guy."

"That was a massive dud," opined @PaulRieckhoff.

And David Rothkopf, columnist for The Daily Beast, wrote on X that "Trump is not going to like having a running mate who is smarter and more articulate (or more utterly devoid of values and principles) than he is.

"This will end in tears," he added.

"Wet box of matches," quipped @Amirpoet.

"Objectively a very poor speech," wrote Lincoln Project co-founder Mike Madrid.

CNN's Abby Phillips said that while the pieces of his life were interesting, the rest "fell flat." Fellow GOP commentator Scott Jennings joked on the network that Vance is "never going to be a Vegas act."

"Trump drew the meh straw," said @CJNWrites.

"Trump looks bored to tears," wrote @SVeillance.

Fortunately for Trump, CNN's John King said there's virtually nothing that shows a vice presidential candidate hurts the lead candidate.
