Carmaker famed for its small motors hints at reviving iconic sports car that was discontinued 19 years ago
A POPULAR carmaker known for its small motors has hinted that it may revive an iconic sports car 19 years after it was discontinued.
The model was only on the road for three years in its day but could be set to make a comeback as a stylish two-seater.
Smart is reportedly considering a return for its beloved Roadster sports car[/caption]Smart is reportedly considering a return for the car as it expands its EV lineup.
The brand is known for its beloved Fortwo model, commonly dubbed the Smart Car, and is actually co-owned by Mercedes.
The Fortwo gained a cult following in the early 2000s, including a starring turn as Inspector Clouseau’s car in the revived Pink Panther franchise.
However, only the most enthusiastic fans may remember that the brand also produced a sportier version between 2002 and 2005.
The Roadster sold around 43,000 units, with the final one currently in place at the Mercedes Benz Museum.
Now, though, Autocar reports that the model is being considered for a comeback as Smart hopes to create a range of “more mainstream” electric cars.
Smart is always unconventional

The firm is already selling a pair of SUVs, the #1 and #3, in Europe and will bring the larger #5 next year.
At the same time, it will be developing a replacement for the Fortwo city car.
However, the report states that once the “core lineup” is set, Smart might try and expand to “enthusiast-minded, low-volume” models, with the new Roadster potentially in play.
CEO Dirk Adelmann said: “We have three great cars and none of them is a Roadster, but why not?
“[I have] a very emotional relationship with that vehicle.
“If we do a Roadster, rest assured it will be very compact – for sure a two-seater.
“Smart is always unconventional.”
It comes after a top manufacturer returned to the UK following a three-year break after one of its models was banned for being too loud.
