Man charged with armed burglary in Poughkeepsie

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department (TPPD) announced an arrest has been made after an investigation into a burglary. Joseph Gallo-Kappus, 30, is facing numerous charges.

On Wednesday morning around 3:18 a.m., police responded to a home on Boulevard Knolls in Poughkeepsie following a report of an active burglary. Arriving officers learned from an elderly resident who had fled the house that her husband was still inside.

After establishing a perimeter, police entered the home through the open garage. Inside, officers located the burglary suspect, later identified as Gallo-Kappus, attempting to leave the house while allegedly carrying boxes of property belonging to the homeowners, including jewelry.

Gallo-Kappus was arrested at the scene without incident. Police say the victims were not injured during the burglary. Gallo-Kappus now faces the following charges:

  • First-degree burglary
  • Third-degree criminal possession of a weapon
  • Fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon
  • Fourth-degree grand larceny
  • Second-degree menacing
  • Fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property

Gallo-Kappus was arraigned at the Town of Poughkeepsie Justice Court. He was then remanded to the Dutchess County Justice and Transition Center without bail.
