2024 Shoal Creek Shopping Cart Corral: How to volunteer
AUSTIN (KXAN) — The 2024 Shoal Creek Shopping Cart Corral is soon underway, and the Shoal Creek Conservancy (SCC) has requested volunteers for the event.
SCC, in partnership with the Watershed Protection Department and Austin Resource Recovery, will work to remove litter and carts from Shoal Creek on July 27 from 8 to 10 a.m. with the help of the volunteers.
“During the inaugural 2023 Shopping Cart Corral, more than 56 volunteers, WPD, and ARR staff spread out over 6 locations along Shoal Creek and in just two hours collectively removed 48 shopping carts, 6 scooters, and 111 bags of litter,” SCC said.
The volunteers are expected to assemble at six locations across the watershed and work to remove hard-to-reach shopping carts from the waterway.
“The Shopping Cart Corral is not only a great effort to remove litter and carts from Shoal Creek. It's also been an opportunity for our team to speak with local store managers and retailers who have the ability to make store-level changes that can prevent shopping carts from wandering off and becoming litter,” Ivey Kaiser, SCC’s Executive Director, said.
