2024 Cubs Draft Recap: These Are Some Huge Dudes!
The Chicago Cubs wrapped up their 2024 draft on Tuesday and one of the first things that stands out is that they selected a handful of huge dudes in the early rounds.
While Florida State third baseman Cam Smith headlined the team’s 20 picks this year there’s one player who stands head and shoulders above the rest, literally. In the seventh round, the Cubs drafted Ivan Brethowr, a 6-foot-6, 250-pound outfielder out of UC Santa Barbara.
Yeah, it’s unfair, but even Brethowr’s head coach couldn’t help to compare him to New York Yankees superstar Aaron Judge.
And how about this line from another scouting report, “absolute brute of a human being.”
Very easy to fall in love with that power potential from Brethowr.
Speaking of some other big dudes the Cubs drafted.
Looking at another trend in the Cubs draft is that they did not pick a single pitcher out of high school, while 17 of their 20 selections were out of college.

Those three high school players are Ronny Cruz, third round pick, Ty Southisene, fourth round pick committed to Tennessee and 11th round pick Eli Lovich, who is committed to Arkansas.
The 2024 MLB Draft had a total of 113 players selected out of high school. That is now the lowest amount in the first 20 rounds ever.
