Player spotted still wearing Spurs training gear two years after leaving the club
Although Pierluigi Gollini hardly had a year to remember whilst in North London, it appears that he still sometimes trains in Spurs training kit during the off-season despite leaving over two years ago.
Gollini’s loan never became permanent
The Italian goalkeeper certainly had an eventful upbringing in football, being on the books of Manchester United for two years, yet hardly any Red Devils fans recall Gollini being at the club due to the then-teenager only featuring for United’s youth sides. (TransferMarkt)
Gollini returned to England two years after his exit from United, joining Aston Villa in 2016, only to be sent on loan to Atalanta in January despite twenty games for Villa in which he only conceded seventeen goals.
After a few seasons back in Italy with Atalanta, gaining some stability, Gollini signed for Tottenham on a deal that was stated by Spurs to be a loan with a view to making the agreement permanent. (Tottenham Hotspur)
Gollini posts himself in a Spurs training shirt on Instagram
Although Gollini only featured ten times for Tottenham, with all the starts being in cup competitions, the Italian has posted himself on Instagram training ahead of the upcoming season, in his 2021/22 Tottenham training gear, embellished with his previous number, 22, on it.
Pierluigi lifted the Serie A title only a year ago with Napoli due to Atalanta terminating the 29-year-old’s loan at Fiorentina, instead sending him to Naples halfway through the season.
Gollini will now return to Atalanta this summer with it being possible that the goalkeeper will make his first appearance for the Europa League winners in three years after three consecutive loans to Tottenham, Fiorentina and Napoli.
Spurs Web opinion
The situation of Gollini continued to baffle me. The loan to Tottenham made sense for the club, who needed a high-quality backup goalkeeper but didn’t want to fork out a transfer fee for a player who would only make a handful of appearances.
Gollini however has continued to play the role of second fiddle at three consecutive clubs now and at 29 he’s running out of chances to become a first-choice ‘keeper somewhere.
Although Gollini has been pictured training in his old Spurs top, I would conclude it’s almost impossible we see him back at Tottenham any time soon.
