The European Parliament is willing to play a role in the Cyprus problem, Roberta Metsola said on Tuesday after being re-elected as its president.

President Nikos Christodoulides congratulated Metsola and said he fully shared the goal to end Cyprus’ division.

Addressing the parliament, Metsola referred to the 50 years since the Turkish invasion of Cyprus.

“Europe must stand for freedom. For peace – a real peace with justice, with dignity and with liberty. Because in Europe, we understand how to heal seemingly impossible divides,” she said.

She added that “it is that role that guides us as we mark 50 sad years of an artificially divided Cyprus.

“We must be the generation that is able to find a way forward under the auspices of the UN plan. We must finally plug that dark gap in Europe’s history with a viable solution in line with security council resolutions and our European values,” Metsola stressed.

Replying to questions, she said Europe could not be whole while Cyprus remained divided.

She added that a statement was expected at Wednesday’s plenary “to send the strongest message that the European Parliament is willing to play its role and to call on all parties to play their respective role.”

President Nikos Christodoulides congratulated Metsola on her re-election.

Heartfelt congratulations my good friend @EP_President for your fully deserved re-election,” he wrote on X.

He added that “we will continue our excellent cooperation at EUCO and EP, also in view of 2026 CY Presidency.

“Fully share goal to be the generation to end Cyprus’ division based on UNSCRs and EU value,” the president noted.
