Questions raised on if Melania's statement on Trump assassination attempt written by AI

After her husband was nearly shot at a Saturday rally, Melania Trump released an extensive statement that is leading some to question whether it is genuine.

The Daily Beast reported that the word "human" was used several times in the 12-paragraph release, which is curious because it is a word that actual humans don't generally use that much when talking about themselves.

"A monster who recognized my husband as an inhuman political machine attempted to ring out Donald's passion – his laughter, ingenuity, love of music and inspiration," reads one suspicious quote from the statement.

Reporter Nell Scovell questioned the idea that Trump is a great lover of music.

"Was Melania Trump confusing Donald with former President Barack Obama?" she asked, explaining the only real song she knows. of Trump adoring is Y.M.C.A. Another might be "My Way," which Trump sang when dancing with her at the inauguration.

Obama, by contrast, publishes his playlist of favorite songs at the end of each year and occasionally puts out a summer playlist as well.

Pointing out that she is a non-native English speaker, Scovell explained that no one expected Mrs. Trump "to suddenly turn into Joan Didion. Still, there’s an awkwardness to her phrasing that raises some questions."

She wondered who would refer to "humans" so frequently.

To make matters worse, Scovell put the speech through ChatGPT and asked it whether or not the statement was written by AI.

“There are several elements in the letter that might indicate it was written by a large-language model like ChatGPT or a similar piece of software," the software said.

According to the artificial intelligence software, Mrs. Trump uses several mixed metaphors and cliches.

One indicator, the AI suggested, is that there are phrases that are used multiple times and it flagged “I am thinking of you, my fellow Americans" as one example.

Another point is also a "lack of specificity," the AI said, noting that a human writer might be more personal

The formality of the text can also indicate that it's generated by artificial intelligence. Most individuals, especially when writing about an emotional topic, do so more casually.

Words like "love," "compassion" and "empathy" are all words used in a "generic way that lacks the nuance and complexity" found in writing by actual humans.

Mrs. Trump ran into trouble in 2016 when she lifted Michelle Obama's speech for the Republican National Convention. It is possible that this is the next step in crafting a statement more creatively. But Scovell wondered why a national campaign with so many communication staffers would go that route.
