Jason Priestly, Jennie Garth, Kevin Smith and others remember Shannen Doherty

Film and television fans mourned the death of Gen X icon Shannen Doherty this weekend. The 53-year-old star of “Beverly Hills, 90210” and “Mallrats” died following a lengthy and public battle with cancer. The news of her death—during a ludicrous weekend in America which also saw the deaths of Dr. Ruth Westheimer and Richard Simmons, as well as an assassination attempt on Donald Trump, former host of the eight-time Emmy-nominated reality show “The Apprentice”—sparked several reminiscences from those who knew her.

Jason Priestly, who played Doherty’s brother on “90210,” shared a promotional photo of the two of them from their younger years, and added, “she was a force of nature and I will miss her.”

“90210”’s Jennie Garth also shared some photos from back in the day, and wrote, “We were so often pitted against each other but none of that reflected the truth of our real relationship which was one built on mutual respect and admiration.”

Brian Austin Green, another “90210” alum, calling “Shan” his “sister,” shared a rather touching “thank you for the gift of you.”

Doherty’s “Mallrats” and “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back” director Kevin Smith shared a carousel of photos from 1995 until recently, explained how Doherty’s star power was what got “Mallrats” made, and expressed the richness of their friendship over the years.

Olivia Munn, currently undergoing breast cancer treatment herself, wrote how the two of them had become “instant friends.” However, she added, “Shannen Doherty as Brenda Walsh is and was and will always be an icon.” In the comments of her note, Rose McGowan wrote that “she also never got over the shock of being friends with Brenda though I played it cool.”

Katie Couric also shared memories of the actress, as well as an image of the two of them at what looks like a Stand Up to Cancer event.
