Abbott returns from Asia economic trip

AUSTIN (KXAN) -- Governor Greg Abbott wrapped up his trip to Asia earlier this week, where his Texas delegation met with several other entities to advance Texas's economy and boost industries that are essential for the economy.

With this three nation economic development mission, Abbott spent six days meeting with Taiwan, South Korea and Japan. The goal was to strengthen ties with these three countries to benefit the Texas economy.

"As Texas looks toward the future, it's crucial that we continue to provide leading businesses from around the world," said Abbott.

The Texas Economic Development Corporation, a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization that markets Texas to businesses, paid for the trip. Abbott says his vision is to build a bigger, better Texas.

Taiwan

In Taiwan, Abbott announced the State of Texas Taiwan office will be working closer on economic growth and cultural exchange. Abbott signed a economic development statement of intent with Jyh-Huei Kuo, Taiwan Minister of Economic Affairs.

Abbott also met with the President of Taiwan Lai Ching-te to strengthen trade relations between Texas and Taiwan through energy and electric vehicle manufacturing.

South Korea

Abbott attended a luncheon hosted by the Korea International Trade Association alongside business leaders from across South Korea.

He thanked the leaders of electric vehicle charger manufacturer SK Signet for working together with Texas to create a electric vehicle charging station manufacturer in El Paso. The company also has an existing facility in Plano.

Japan

While in Japan, Abbott met with executives from Toyota and discussed more opportunities for how Toyota could continue to invest in Texas.

Abbott wrapped up his trip to Japan by meeting Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike. He signed a statement of mutual cooperation with the Tokyo's Bureau of Industrial and Labor Affairs.
