Did Craig Breslow Tip Hand About Red Sox’s Trade Deadline Plan?

Craig Breslow has been understandably measured when speaking about Major League Baseball’s upcoming trade deadline.

While appearing on NESN’s broadcast Sunday afternoon, though, the Boston Red Sox chief baseball officer seemingly hinted which way he’s leaning.

“We first have to start with crediting the players on the field, the staff,” Breslow said during the second inning as the Red Sox hosted the Kansas City Royals at Fenway Park.

“But yeah, I think this team has put themselves in a position where we have to take them seriously, right? The job that they had to do is to win as many games as possible and they’re doing that. They’ll continue to do that — it’s my hope, it’s my expectation. We need to be thinking about opportunities for us to improve the club.”

Breslow previously expressed he would pick a lane in regards to either buying or selling. The Red Sox, who entered their series finale against the Royals in control of the American League wild-card spot, have many believing Breslow should buy after winning nine of their last 12 games.

When asked if he’s been surprised with how the Red Sox performed in the unofficial first half, Breslow praised the group of young players who have impressed.

“I’m very careful about saying someone or something has exceeded the expectations because I think that necessarily puts me in a position where I didn’t think we were gonna get a lot from certain guys, and that wasn’t the case,” Breslow said. “I think instead what we saw was a bunch of young players who were going to need to take meaningful steps forward in the big leagues, and you’re seeing that.”

The Red Sox will go on break following their series finale against the Royals. The trade deadline is set for July 30.
