What Trump shooting means politically for both sides with election looming

TOPEKA (KSNT) - Former president Donald Trump is 'fine' after a shooting at his campaign rally forced him off the stage.

27 News Political Analyst Bob Beatty joined KSNT in discussion to the assassination attempt of former President Trump.

Beatty says that since Trump is okay, there can be discussions on what this means politically for the upcoming election.

Since former president Trump's campaign has been about defending America and taking on what he calls the "Deep State," Saturday's events will only help his campaign.

"Going right into the convention. It will invigorate his supporters, invigorate himself," Beatty said. "As horrible as this is, this will make Donald Trump and as his campaign even more determined to win this election."

This coming with the Republican National Convention starting in just two days, Monday, July 15.

As for the standing President Joe Biden, Beatty says this could take away some of the noise he has been receiving following the debate.

"Does this take away from the impetus and drive by the Democrats who want to have Joe Biden step down," Beatty said. "The focus of the nation is on Donald Trump... and does that take away from the momentum that was seemingly building of the people that wanted to replace Joe Biden?"

Beatty adds today's news could, ironically, lead to more civil race amongst the two candidates.
