Mets Minors Recap: Baty, Parada Homer to Lead Clubs to Win

After hitting his first rough stretch since being demoted, Brett Baty broke out in a big way Friday night for Syracuse.

Binghamton won their seventh straight game behind Kevin Parada and Ryan Clifford. The two pulled them within a half-game of the Eastern League Northeast leader, the Portland Sea Dogs.

Triple-A

On Friday, Baty broke out of his first slump in Triple-A in Syracuse’s win over the Railriders. Baty was previously 0-for-15 before the long ball in the fifth inning to right field that went 408 feet.

Vasil was fantastic again for Syracuse, giving the Mets a quality start of six innings of two-run ball. Vasil hasn’t given up more than three earned runs in a game since May 30th and has gone six innings in four straight starts. After Dom Hamel excelled in his outing Thursday night, it’s a huge positive to see the Mets’ top pitching prospects rounding into form as the summer rolls into the trade deadline.

Binghamton beat the Fisher Cats 6-4 behind Parada’s second home run in as many days. Parada, who struggled mightily the first half of the season, has turned it on in July. He has 12 hits this month, including his ninth and tenth round-trippers of the season.

Clifford hasn’t cooled off yet, stroking another extra-base hit on Friday. Entering July with a batting average and OPS of .178 and .828, Clifford now has a .238 batting average and .924 OPS, respectively. Binghamton has taken advantage of these two in the middle of their lineup, winning their seventh straight game.

McLean allowed two or fewer earned runs for the third straight start while not conceding a home run. The Oklahoma State product has seemingly shifted towards pitching exclusively (he hasn’t had a start in the batting lineup since June 20th), but his quality on the mound has increased dramatically.

Brooklyn dropped their Friday night matchup against Wilmington. It was their third loss out of four games in the series, with two left to play. Super utility player Wilfredo Lara continues to show off the bat after a great June, where he slashed .256/.380/.402 (.782 OPS). Lara has nine hits, four for extra-bases, and a .774 OPS in ten games this month.

St. Lucie’s offense struggled to string together at-bats while their pitching walked eight batters en route to their 56th loss of the season. Racking up only two extra-base hits and drawing one walk, the Mets’ bats were mostly silent aside from Cuevas’ RBI double.

Mercedes has been solid for St. Lucie despite his 0-9 record. Lopez recorded five of the fastest pitches in Single-A Friday night, touching 99.6 on his heater.
