Newell: An Extremely Proud Moment For Me

0

Newly appointed Club Captain, Joe Newell, admits it is a huge honour to be named the Hibees Club Captain for the upcoming 2024/25 campaign.

It was a busy day for the box-to-box midfielder, who penned a new two-year contract extension – keeping him at the Club until summer 2027.

The 31-year-old joined Hibs in summer 2019 and has since become a fans’ favourite with the Easter Road support. Now beginning his sixth full season with the Club, Newell admitted how happy he was to extend his stay in Edinburgh.

“I am delighted, I have loved my time here so far. When the guys approached me asking me to extend it I was over the moon and it was an easy decision for me really.

“Throughout last season and this summer I have had a lot of positive talks and I am delighted to get it over the line and sorted.”

Hibs Head Coach David Gray, confirmed Joe Newell as Club Captain for the 2024/25 campaign – following in the footsteps of Paul Hanlon and Gray himself. The midfielder continued, explaining how proud a moment it was to be given the armband.

“It was a massive moment to be named Club Captain. I got a taste for it last year when I was Vice Captain. It is a strange feeling, it is something that I have never experienced before until the Gaffer asked me to do it.

To put it simply, it is a huge honour – it is the biggest honour of my career so far. It really isn’t lost on me how important it is and how big a role it is to play. It is a privilege and something that I am very proud of."

Over the years in Leith, Newell has developed into a natural leader both on and off the pitch and has stepped in to captain the team on 29 occasions so far.

“You get that feeling of pride when you pull on the armband. You are in charge of the dressing room now and the voice for the players. It comes with experience, in my younger days I was too immature and probably not seen as a leader in the group. But with age, experience and maturity the Gaffer has seen those qualities in me and it is something I am extremely proud of and more than happy to do.”
