Following Thursday’s game, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza reported positive news on the injury front regarding Reed Garrett. There were initial concerns about a ligament issue, but the diagnosis instead turned out to be nerve inflammation. Garrett last pitched on Tuesday night, allowing three earned runs over 2/3 of an inning before being placed on the injured list the following day.

Mike Petriello of MLB.com wrote about Nimmo, who ranks eighth among outfielders in fWAR since 2018, and how he remains under-appreciated despite his consistency, stating he was snubbed for the All-Star game once again.

Will Sammon of The Athletic talked about how Nimmo sought advice from Mets coaches after reading about Joey Votto’s conversation with Hall of Famer David Ortiz, which resonated with the outfielder during a slump.

According to Steve Gelbs of SNY, Jose Iglesias was not in the lineup yesterday against a left-handed starter because he felt under the weather. Symptoms were also present on Wednesday night as Iglesias required IV treatment after experiencing post-game cramps.

1988: In the 1988 All-Star Game held at Cincinnati’s Riverfront Stadium, the Mets had a strong presence with four players. Dwight Gooden received starting pitching honors for the National League for the second time in three years while Gary Carter started behind the plate for his eighth consecutive All-Star Game. Gooden gave up a solo home run to Terry Steinbach but was otherwise solid while Carter contributed with a single. Despite efforts from Darryl Strawberry, who also singled, and David Cone, who struck out Paul Molitor in a scoreless inning, the National League fell short in a 2-1 loss against a talented American League squad led by future Met Frank Viola and seven relievers.

Birthdays: Chasen Shreve (34), Dick Rusteck (83).
