Limassol villages plagued by fires to create monitoring system

Villages in Limassol are due to create a Monitoring Centre for wildfires it emerged on Friday, after the area has been one of the hardest hit this year.

The communities Pachna, Apesia, Foini, Eptagonia, and Vouni said that the centre will operate with the installation of specialised equipment, cameras, in each village.

The cameras will be scanning the area in real time, using specialised artificial intelligence technology that will detect fire outbreaks.

According to an announcement from the communities, the FireWatch system will be mounted in high places and will monitor the landscape with a sophisticated monitoring unit to collect data.

Upon detection of a fire, the system will immediately inform the centre and the fire services, thus reducing their response time and giving an advantage in the management of fires.

The communities have applied for funding from the EU programme to develop rural areas.
