Quiet of City district ‘disturbed by drug abuse’

On Wednesday, The Nation continued its series Crime Check, which examines the issue of serious criminal activity in our country.

We hear from residents who are not only affected but concerned about the crimes committed in their communities.

Some residents of Kings Village, King Street, The City spoke about the situation following a stabbing death which occurred in the area last week Thursday.

Some said they are increasingly alarmed by the rise in violent incidents linked to substance abuse in their usually quiet community. They report that illicit drugs, particularly marijuana and cocaine, are consuming several locals and visitors.

One mother emphasised, “It is the drugs…people that smoking marijuana and doing cocaine don’t like to hear that the drugs doing them anything, but it does do something to your brain and it has an effect, but they don’t see it.”

The recent fatal stabbing of Herbert Ronald Roger Deare also known as “General” or “Breadfruit Man,” has intensified concerns.

Described as a peaceful man who often preached about Jesus, his death shocked the community.

A teenage resident shared, “This stabbing thing is a new thing. And for the body to stab ‘General’…he don’t do nobody nothing.”

Despite efforts by parents to shield their children from the impacts of drug use, the problem persists, many reported. (TG)

Look out for Crime Check in the Weekend Nation as The Nation team heads to Belleplaine, St Andrew.
