Human case of bubonic plague reported in US: What to know

0

NEW YORK (PIX11) – A human case of the bubonic plague, responsible for one of the most deadly outbreaks in history, has been identified in Colorado, according to health officials.

It was discovered in Pueblo County. The source of the infection remains unclear.

The bacteria responsible for the plague is most often transmitted through flea bites and contact with infected animals, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Officials advise the public to rodent-proof their property, avoid direct contact with dead animals and use regular flea treatments for pets.

The plague is treatable with antibiotics, but it must be treated as soon as possible, according to the CDC. On average, seven people are infected with the plague each year in the U.S., per the CDC.
