Red Sox’s Craig Breslow Identifies ‘Irresponsible’ Deadline Idea

The Boston Red Sox are surging toward the All-Star break, sitting nine games over .500 entering the final homestand before then.

That’s set the team up in a solid spot as the Red Sox currently hold control of the final American League playoff spot. With just three weeks to go until the trade deadline, Boston keeps playing like a team with a boost from the front office.

That topic swirls around Fenway Park and Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow gave a glimpse of the decision-making needed leading up to the deadline.

“The thing that the team can do to help with this lane picking is to win as many games as possible,” Breslow told Tom Caron on NESN’s pregame coverage on Tuesday. “We’re in a place where it would be irresponsible not to explore the opportunities that may be in front of us to make the team better. Now, what we are able to actually execute on is a different set of questions.”

Part of the draw of hiring Breslow was having the mind of the player in an executive’s role. Breslow, who won a title with the Red Sox in 2013, knows the value of what an impactful trade deadline can do.

“We’re watching a team that’s been incredibly exciting and athletic and has been resilient in overcoming injuries,” Breslow added. “We’re winning a bunch of games. The importance of playing meaningful games down the stretch (and) exposing our young players to the postseason is not lost on me.”

The MLB trade deadline falls on July 30 with action from the Red Sox to be determined.
