Ministry of Refugees: Over 18,000 Afghan migrants deported from Iran and Pakistan in 18 days
The Ministry of Migrants and Repatriation has announced statistics indicating that in the past 18 days, 18,600 Afghan migrants have been deported from Iran and Pakistan and returned to Afghanistan.
Abdul Mutalib Haqqani, spokesperson for the Ministry of Migrants and Repatriation, stated that over 18,000 migrants returned to Afghanistan in 18 days, including 4,000 from Pakistan and 14,500 from Iran after being deported.
Meanwhile, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has emphasized the need to find “just and durable solutions” for Afghan migrants in Pakistan, with the support of the international community.
He arrived in Islamabad earlier this week to discuss the situation of Afghan migrants and visited refugee camps in Haripur and Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, meeting with Pakistani officials.
The governments of Iran and Pakistan have significantly increased the deportation of Afghan migrants in recent months, expelling hundreds of undocumented migrants daily from their respective countries.
The dire humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan has worsened due to the influx of deported migrants. Many returnees face severe challenges upon arrival, including a lack of shelter, basic necessities, and employment opportunities.
The sudden influx places immense pressure on local communities and humanitarian organizations, which are already stretched thin in their capacity to assist.
The current situation demands urgent international attention and support to address the immediate needs of Afghan returnees and to develop long-term solutions that ensure their safety, dignity, and integration. Without concerted efforts to stabilize Afghanistan and provide sustainable livelihoods, the cycle of displacement and forced return will continue to perpetuate suffering and instability in the region.
