Flooding from Hurricane Beryl closes Holly Beach, coastal flood warning

HOLLY BEACH, La. (KLFY)-- In Cameron Parish, Holly Beach residents experienced flooding due to high waters from Hurricane Beryl. Although flooding is a common issue, residents who spoke with News 10 said something needs to be done about the town's drainage.

Holly Beach, located in Cameron Parish on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico is no stranger to flooding. News 10 spoke with residents Ray Miller and Cassandra Corner about flooding in the area. They said the slightest amount of rainfall can lead to flooded streets.

"When it floods and all the water gets to here and it comes from the gulf into town, it has no where else to go," Corner said.

Miller said the street he lives on is one of the areas that floods the most.

"If we get a half inch of rain down here, Mallard Street floods because water can't get into the drain extensions," Miller said.

He said waters can get high enough to the point a boat is needed to navigate through the flood.

"It's nothing to get 12 to 18 inches of water on Mallard Street and it backs up into my garage," Miller said.

Corner captured video of flood waters throughout their neighborhood and can be heard saying "Every entrance to Holly Beach is flooded like this."

For both Corner and Miller, high waters brought on by rain and coastal flooding should be addressed by officials. Miller said he's been dealing with poor drainage for over twenty years and would like to see the parish do something to fix the flooding issue.

"I would like to see the parish do their job. That's why we pay taxes," Miller said.
