Officers did not explain why but told his bosses they were seeking a charge of controlling and coercive behaviour/harassment.

Bail over the next 16½ months required him to make 300-mile trips to surrender to custody.

He said he was not allowed to contact a family court to explain he could not attend a hearing over his daughter.

The marine argued officers “would not have treated a white male serviceman with the same scepticism, unfairness and lack of objectivity”.

He quit the military in May.

West Yorkshire Police paid the costs without admission of liability.
