Fourth of July shooting on Myrtle Avenue

ALBANY (NEWS10) - In the early hours of the morning, police responded to reports of a shooting at a residence on Myrtle Avenue in Albany. The incident occurred shortly after midnight during a large gathering, resulting in six young individuals, aged between 16 and 19, sustaining gunshot wounds. None of the injuries are considered life-threatening.

Residents of the area described the event as a high school graduation and Fourth of July celebration, which commenced around 10 PM. A flyer advertising the open-invite party had been circulating online. Approximately two hours into the festivities, gunfire erupted on the street, although it remains unclear if the altercation began at the party.

Footage from Myrtle Avenue obtained by News10 showcases the aftermath, with police vehicles displaying flashing lights and numerous people congregating in the streets.

During our visit, members of SNUG, an anti-violence outreach organization, were seen distributing information to those affected by the night's events. Eric Thompson, a SNUG outreach officer, noted the convergence of significant social gatherings. "You had a big graduation. A lot of people had gotten together. You have the 4th of July a lot. So it's a number of incidents this particular week that I believe could have maybe inflamed certain tensions," Thompson remarked.

The Albany Police Department has yet to provide further details on the ongoing investigation.
