Sir Keir Starmer simply wants to get Britain working – it’s that he’ll want to be judged on

0

AT last, the election is over. Most of us will feel relieved — that change is on the cards, that we don’t have to see any more political adverts, that we can now focus on the football.

But of course for Keir, today is just the start.

Unlike some politicians, he isn’t in this for the title or the glory.

While many politicians would see winning an election as a well-deserved moment of victory, he won’t. Far from it.

For Keir, winning the election was about earning the right to start making the country work again.

It’s that he’ll want to be judged on – not how big his majority is.

The thing that has always struck me about Keir is how unlike most politicians he is.

The first time I had dinner with him and his wife was after he had just entered Parliament.

After they left, I thought about just how different Keir seemed.

That’s because Keir hasn’t come to politics with a dogmatic ideology — more a sense of public service and a desire to get things done.

That frustrates some people, especially on the Left.

But the reason Keir has got so far in politics and managed to change the Labour party — despite not being a natural politician — is because he’s more in touch with the public than most.

Keir knows what Sun readers and our country want.

To get things working again so you can book a GP, visit a dentist or drive down roads without blowing out your tyres.

He knows we need to take tough choices required to grow the economy and get a grip of the chaotic immigration system.

These challenges are stark.

None of this is going to be easy.

But I know that Keir will govern from the centre and focus on making things work.

I also know that he will judge himself by his results.

And that’s what we should do too.

Because whether you voted for him or not, getting Britain working again is what we are all crying out for.
